Jackson, Vargo lead GC past Skipjacks

McHenry, MD – Gavin Jackson scored 31 points and Alex Vargo added 25 Sunday afternoon as the Lakers pulled away late to defeat visiting Chesapeake College, 88-72.

"I'm just proud of them," said GC head coach Matt McCullough, who lost starters Nate Washington and Stephen Robinson to season-ending injuries in last week's loss to Allegany College of Maryland. "Our guys wanted to win. We had guys hurt, guys playing out of position, but they went out there and competed."

Jackson (five assists, three steals) almost single-handedly broke the game open in the final minutes. The freshman guard scored 10 points – including a pair of treys – in a 16-6 run that turned a 66-58 game into an 82-64 rout.

"He can shoot it," McCullough said of Jackson. "He's streaky – you saw it early in the game and you saw it at the end."

"I just told myself at the five-minute timeout that I had to stop hesitating and I had to play my game," said Jackson.

"I'm proud of my team," added Jackson. "This season's had a lot of ups and downs. We could have quit today and we didn't. We fought."

Vargo, a red-shirt freshman averaging a team-high 25.8 points per game, also praised the team effort.

"We just came together," said the 6-foot-6 swingman, who also had five rebounds and four assists. "We executed offensively and we rotated well defensively."

GC (14-14 overall, 5-7 Region 20) – which had a 42-38 halftime lead – used the win to snap a four-game losing streak. Chesapeake fell to 14-16, 8-5.

"I think our effort was great and we hit some tough shots," said McCullough, noting his squad "had to win to stay alive" in the NJCAA Division II Region 20 playoff race.

The Lakers must win Tuesday night's 7 p.m. regular-season finale against visiting College of Southern Maryland to have any chance to make the regional tournament. They also need Potomac State College of West Virginia University to lose its final two games.

TaQuan Courtney's 3-pointer gave the Skipjacks a 52-50 lead, but Garrett responded with a 12-0 run. Vargo sank two free throws with 13:34 remaining to put GC ahead to stay and four different Lakers contributed field goals as the hosts built a 62-52 lead.

Chesapeake was still within 66-58 when Jackson scored eight straight Laker points, including a pair of 3-pointers and a jumper that gave GC a 74-60 lead with 3:46 remaining.

K'Shawn Scott finished with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Kydale Staten added seven points with 10 rebounds.

Josh Rivers (15 points), Azim Sana (14 points, 14 rebounds), Armani Martin (12 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists), and Courtney (10 points) all hit double figures for Chesapeake.
