Johnstown, PA – Chi Lalk had a match-high 13 kills, Paola Chirino contributed a match-high 23 digs, and Karen Cuellar posted match highs in assists (25) and service aces (six) last Tuesday night as Garrett College's women's volleyball team swept winless host Pennsylvania Highlands Community College (0-14).
The Lady Lakers rolled to a 25-6, 25-9, and 25-9 victory, their ninth win in their last 11 matches. Garrett College – 0-18 two years ago – has clinched a winning season and a spot in the NJCAA Division II Region 20 playoffs.
"Overall, it was a well-played match for us," said third-year GC head coach Brittany Jackson. "We kept our own errors low and we played to win. It's the cleanest performance I have seen from the team."
Jackson said she's proud of the progress the Lady Lakers have made since the program's post-COVID restart in 2022.
"I always talk about the 2022 team being the foundation team that started back up after COVID," said Jackson. "This 2024 team is the one building off the foundation laid down by the 2022 team.
"I think it's just incredible to see this program becoming what I knew it could be when I took the job," added Jackson. "The goal was always to build Garrett College volleyball's reputation and make it known as a competitive program. And I'm proud of both the past and current players that contributed to reaching that goal."
Garrett improved to 11-6 overall and 7-3 in the region. The Lady Lakers host rival Allegany College of Maryland (11-3, 9-2) Thursday at 6 p.m. in their regular-season finale after a Wednesday match at Potomac State College of West Virginia University (11-6, 9-5).
