GC’s Hull wins twice at wrestling nationals

Council Bluffs, IA – Camden Hull, Garrett College's 133-pounder, went 2-2 at the NJCAA wrestling championships last Friday here at the Mid-America Center.

 

Hull pinned Vincente Navarro (Henry Ford College) before being pinned by Michael Catanzaro (Niagara College). He then defeated Nelson Anderson (Minnesota North College-Itasca), 21-17, in the consolation bracket before suffering a 23-7 tech fall at the hands of John Paul Lavarias (Umpqua Community College).

 

GC 125-pounder Nicholas Anderson, who earned a first-round bye, pinned Dominic Chimeno (Iowa Lakes Community College) in 4:10 to reach the round of 16 in the championship bracket.

 

Anderson then dropped a 13-2 major decision to Logan Crawford (Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College), who finished fifth in the nation. Anderson was eliminated in a 4-1 loss to Corey Dye (Andrew College) in the consolation bracket.

 

Cole Stuchal (165) dropped a 9-6 decision to Khaled Alkelane (Morton College) before pinning James Morgan (Ridgewater College) in the consolation bracket. Stuchal was eliminated in a 5-4 loss to Jose Alvarenga-giron (Sussex County Community College).

 

GC's other six national qualifiers – Brooks Smith (149), Everett Nichols (157), Tyberious Clayton (174), Braeden Poorbaugh (184), Drayk Bunn (197), and Jacob Beeman (285) – each went 0-2.

 

"I think that we wrestled some of our best matches against the best guys in the country," said GC head coach David Wingate, whose squad finished 39th out of 76 teams. "This tournament is one of the most difficult in the country. I believe that this program is on an incline and I'm excited to see what we bring to the mat next season."
