GC Wrestling opens season at King of the Mont wrestling tournament

Mont Alto, PA. – In the first tournament of the 2021-22 Garrett College Wrestling season, the Lakers claimed six pool championships of the 10 weight classes, recording 13 pins, 3 technical falls, 3 major decisions, and an overall record of 26-7 at the King of the Mont tournament at Penn State- Mont Alto.

 

• 125 pounds

Sophomore Brandan Myers completed a perfect day winning his 125 lb pool going 3-0 against opponents from Keystone College, Camden County, and Jamestown Community College. Myers started his day with a thrilling come from behind 6-5 victory. Myers continued to run with that energy, recording a second round pin, closing his day with a 4-2 decision against his final opponent from Jamestown C.C.

 

• 125 pounds

Freshman Nathan Pelesky was a man on a mission in his Laker debut, capturing his pool championship compiling a 3-0 record on the day. He pinned opponents from Keystone College, Camden County, and Jamestown C.C.

 

• 133 pounds

Freshman Alex Vagnier finished the day with a 3-1 record, recording wins at both 133 lbs and 141 lbs. Following a first round loss to his PSU Mont Alto opponent, Alex wrestled a match at 141 lbs and pinned his Lackawanna opponent. He continued with that momentum in the third and fourth round of the tournament, pinning both his opponent from Keystone College, and from Thaddeus Stevens.

 

• 141 pounds

Freshman Caleb Everhart captured the 141 lb pool championship in his first tournament as a Laker. Everhart put up 16 points in his first match against JMU, recording a 16-3 major decision. In his second and final bout of the day, Everhart secured a 4-1 decision against Jamestown, although the score was low Everhart won in a dominant fashion.

 

• 149 pounds

Sophomore Trey Weinell finished the day with a 3-1 record. Two returning national qualifiers faced off in round one, with a 9-8 score Weinell was able to edge Trenton Donahue of Jamestown CC. Weinell received a forfeit in the second round from another Jamestown C.C. opponent, then recorded a fall against Thaddeus Stevens. Weinell lost 12-2 in his final match of the day.

 

• 157 pounds

Sophomore Noah Korenoski won 4 matches and his pool at The King of The Mont. Korenoski recorded a technical fall in his first match against a Keystone College opponent and followed that performance up with a second round pin against his James Maddison opponent. In the third round Korenoski received a forfeit from Shenandoah, and ended his day by pinning his opponent from Camden County.

 

• 165 pounds

Freshman Navid Ighani took the mat for the first time as a Laker and secured 3 pins and a decision en route to winning his 165 lb pool. In rounds one and two Ighani recorded pins against opponents from Keystone College, and Camden County. Navid's biggest challenge came in the third round where he rallied a come from behind 6-5 victory against a district foe from Lackawanna. He closed his day with one more pin against Thaddeus Stevens.

 

• 184 pounds

Freshman Paxton Wertz was back on the mats this weekend after missing the majority of the preseason due to sickness and injury. Although these setbacks took training time from him, Wertz looked good in his showing. He dropped three matches on the day to opponents from Thaddeus Stevens, PSU Mont Alto, and Shenandoah University..

 

 

• 197 pounds

Freshman Elijah Hunter was all bonus points in his 3-0 performance! Hunter recorded a first round major decision against Keystone College, blanking his opponent 12-0. Elijah won by 12 points again in his second match, recording another major decision with a 16-4 score. Hunter finished his day with another high scoring match, tech falling his opponent from Shenandoah with dominant turns and takedowns.

 

• 285 pounds

Freshman Nasiir Duncan got his first taste of college wrestling and the excitement that comes with a big pin. In round one, after being taken down first Nasiir exploded to his feet, got an escape and then hit a cement mixer for the pin over Keystone College. Duncan dropped his next two bouts finishing the day 1-2.

 

 The Lakers return to action this weekend at The Washington and Jefferson Invite.
