Bel Air, MD – Hasana Akinloye scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Lady Lakers into double figures Sunday afternoon as Garrett College defeated host Harford Community College, 68-42, for its seventh straight women's basketball win.

"She's been working on her mid-range game and getting to the foul line," GC head coach JT Lewis said of Akinloye's offensive progress. "Her aggressiveness getting to the rim and just running the court has been huge for us."

Gabriella Valentinetti posted a double-double (17 points, 13 rebounds) with three assists and four steals as GC improved to 13-5. Renee Timbers scored 18 points and dealt out a game-high five assists, and Aleeya Silver chipped in 10 points.

Garrett dominated from the start, racing to a 12-1 lead as Timbers connected on three layups and Valentinetti added two baskets. The Lady Lakers, who had a 19-6 lead at the quarter break, reeled off the first seven points of the second quarter to build a 20-point cushion.

Garrett, which improved to 4-2 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference, had a 26-12 lead at the half and a 48-27 cushion after three quarters.

Bayleigh Lamberson only scored four points, but she hauled in 11 rebounds and blocked two shots for the Lady Lakers.

"Bayleigh's been playing 40 minutes a game while battling back injuries," noted Lewis.

Garrett 79, Frederick 74

Frederick, MD – Renee Timbers drained a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 1:28 remaining Saturday afternoon as the Lady Lakers edged host Frederick.

The win allowed Garrett to improve to 7-1 in NJCAA Region 20 Division II contests. GC is currently third in the region standings behind CCBC Essex (7-0) and Montgomery College (8-1), who play each other on Saturday.

"For us to be successful, Renee's got to shoot the ball," said GC head coach JT Lewis. "She's one of our stronger 3-point shooters and she's done a great job running the team from the point."

Timbers' trey broke a 70-70 tie. After Aleeya Silver split a pair of free throws, Frederick's Amelia Robins (11 points) sank a jumper to pull the Cougars within 74-72 with 37 seconds remaining.

Timbers (19 points, five rebounds) made the second of two free throws with 30 seconds left, but Paige Smith (team-high 22 points) nailed a jumper five seconds later to get Frederick within 75-74. The Lady Lakers then put the game away at the line as Timbers and Gabriella Valentinetti each sank a pair in the final 21 seconds.

Valentinetti posted game highs in points (25) and rebounds (12) while passing out four assists and coming up with two steals.

"Gabby has slowed down, which has actually helped her a lot," said Lewis. "She's been aggressive offensively, which is what we've been trying to get her to do all year.

"She's done a wonderful job rebounding, which has been important for us because we're undersized," added Lewis.

Silver added 21 points with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Bayleigh Lamberson chipped in eight points and nine rebounds, while Hasana Akinloye contributed six points for GC.

Garrett never trailed after putting together a 12-0, first-quarter run, but Frederick tied the game on three occasions in the fourth quarter.

Frederick fell to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference. Cougars Kayla Dangerfield (10 rebounds) and Alaysia Jemmott (six rebounds) each scored 15 points.

Notes: The Lady Lakers pulled off the weekend sweep with versatile guard Manuela Perez de Castro missing both games with the flu.
