Garrett splits first two games in SC

Myrtle Beach, SC – Jacob Kennell and Angel Oquendo each had two hits, scored three times, and drove in a run Sunday as Garrett College's baseball team opened its Myrtle Beach trip by defeating Middlesex College, 7-4.

 

Collin Reed (RBI) also had two hits and drove in a run as the Lakers picked up their second win of the season. Colby Schmitz combined with two relievers on a four-hitter while earning the victory.

 

Montgomery County (PA) Community College defeated the Lakers, 3-2, on Monday as Chris Tomlinson's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Dillon Withers with the winning run. Oquendo drove in both Garrett runs with a solo homer and a sacrifice fly.

 

Lance Vickers and Erick Batista each had two hits for the Lakers (2-5). Collin Cottrell spaced seven hits and a walk over five innings, yielding two runs (one unearned) while reliever Stefan Machkovski went 1 1/3 innings, taking the loss.

 

The two games were part of eight games at the Ripken Experience park in Myrtle Beach.

 

Prior to the trip, GC defeated West Virginia Wesleyan's junior varsity, 11-0.  Five Lakers had two hits each: Zach Hallenbeck (homer, three runs, RBI), Chance Ritchey (double, two runs), Easton Rhoten (two RBI), Reed (two runs, three RBI) and Batista (two runs).

 

Winning pitcher Coleman Bullard combined with Cottrell, Dariel Walker, and Schmitz on a three-hit shutout.
