Skipjacks sweep GC in baseball finale

Cumberland, MD – Chesapeake College swept a season-ending baseball doubleheader Saturday from Garrett College, 12-6 and 9-2, at the Hot Stove Baseball Complex.

 

The Lakers were eliminated from NJCAA Division II Region 20 playoff consideration a day earlier while splitting a doubleheader with Montgomery College. GC edged the Raptors, 5-4, in the opener to keep their playoff hopes alive before dropping an 8-1 decision in the nightcap.

 

Matt Stamm (4-for-4, double, two runs, two RBI), Michael Koerner (3-for-4, run, three RBI), and Hunter Wolfe (2-for-3, run, RBI) combined for nine of Chesapeake's 10 hits in Saturday's opener. The Skipjacks (15-27) used a four-run sixth to break open what had been a 7-6 contest.

 

Theron Mrohs allowed a run on two hits over the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the Game 1 victory.

 

Chance Moore (run, three RBI) went 3-for-4 to pace the Lakers (20-31) in Game 1.

 

Billy Froelich (two runs, RBI), Josh Cohee (homer, run, two RBI), Evan Bruder (run, RBI), and Jack Greenspan (two runs) each had two hits for the Skipjacks in the nightcap. Winning pitcher Grant Thomas gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with eight strikeouts and four walks over five innings.

 

Michael Cubilete (2-for-2, walk, run) had half of GC's four hits in the nightcap.

 

Luis Rodriguez (4-for-5), Grant Landis, Chance Ritchey, Cubilete, and Zach Swanger each drove in a run as GC won Friday's opener against the Raptors. Kellen Kinsler had a hit and scored twice, while Daniel Garcia went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

 

Moore (4-5) pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts to earn the victory.

 

MC (28-17) scored four runs in its first three offensive innings to build a 4-0 lead in the nightcap. Cameron Goodling (two hits), Andres Rivera (two hits), and Kevin Espiritusanto each drove in two runs for the Raptors.

 

Moore had two hits, Garcia (double, walk) reached base twice, and Ritchey drove home GC's only run in the nightcap.
