Matt McCullough is entering his second season as the school’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Garrett College.

In his first season, McCullough lead the Lakers to an 18-11 record. McCullough led the Lakers to a WPCC conference championship with an 80-68 victory over the Community College of Beaver County, helping him be named the WPCC Conference Coach of the Year. The Lakers also clinched a Region XX tournament berth in McCullough’s first season.

McCullough guided three WPCC All Conference players (Jhaiden Wilson, Lamont Powell, Darius Jones), two All Region XX players (Jhaiden Wilson, Darius Jones), and one All Maryland JUCO player (Jhaiden Wilson) all in his first year with the Lakers.

McCullough grew up in Garrett County, graduating from Southern Garrett High School in 2016. During his years at Southern Garrett, McCullough was a standout 3-sport athlete in Basketball, Baseball and Golf.

Foregoing collegiate athletics, McCullough decided to focus his attention on committing to coaching basketball. McCullough attended Frostburg State in the fall of 2016 and graduated in 2.5 years in the fall of 2018, while earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science and a Minor in Coaching.

While attending Frostburg State, McCullough spent his years assisting at the Boy’s Varsity Basketball level. He assisted Coach Tom Bosley, who has guided the Southern Rams for almost 40 seasons. Coach Bosley is a 400+ win coach, and in the 3 seasons that McCullough was a full time assistant, he helped them to a 64-12 overall record. During his 3 full-seasons from 2017-2020, Southern Garrett reached 3 Regional finals(winning 2), as well as earning back to back Maryland state tournament bids.

In the summer of 2020, McCullough joined Coach Sean Brown’s staff at Frostburg State University. In a Covid-19 impacted season, McCullough helped guide a disciplined Men’s Basketball team in which Frostburg was the only team not to have a COVID-19 pause during the shortened regular season. McCullough’s role expanded in his first full-season with the Bobcats, helping lead a young and improving group in the 2nd season of FSU’s tenure in the Mountain East Conference.

Entering his second season with the Lakers at 24 years old, McCullough has high goals set for himself and his team entering the 2022-2023 season. However, the ultimate goal for McCullough remains unchanged, and that is to help each of his student athletes make strides on reaching their life goals after Garrett College both on and off the basketball court.
