Lakers, GC Foundation set up team accounts

McHenry, MD – The Garrett College Foundation and the Lakers' Athletics Department are teaming up to raise funds for both the Athletics Department and individual sports teams.

Foundation Executive Director Cherie Krug and GC Athletics Co-Directors Elizabeth Show and Eric Hallenbeck are leading the initiative. The trio, along with Garrett College President Dr. Richard Midcap, signed Memorandums of Understandings covering general athletics, baseball, softball, and women's basketball funds last Wednesday.

"I'm excited about the partnership between our Foundation and our Athletics Department," said Midcap. "The College invests heavily in our sports program, but there are always some things that would be nice to have that we can't provide. We anticipate this fundraising partnership will help us address that issue."

"This will help with things like warm-up suits, equipment, and team travel," said Hallenbeck.

"We also have the capability of using these funds for athletic scholarships," noted Show.

Those newly established funds – along with ones being set up for men's basketball, women's soccer, women's volleyball, and wrestling – are receiving seed funding from the proceeds of  a recent Garrett College golf tournament.

Krug said the Foundation and the Athletics Department are in the beginning stages of planning a comprehensive athletics fundraising campaign. The first part of the campaign – a professional feasibility study to determine the potential fundraising capacity for the initiative – is similar to the one conducted prior to the Foundation's highly successful STEM and Performing Arts Center (PAC) campaigns.

"We have extraordinarily generous donors in our community," said Krug. "We think, as with the STEM and PAC campaigns, once we articulate the need our community will strongly support this campaign."
